  5. the drum, the observer could 
  6. select a disk that appeared to be 
  7. equal in size to the standard. If 
  8. a moon illusion occurredΓÇöΓÇôthat 
  9. is, if the horizon disk looked 
  10. largerΓÇöΓÇôthe observer would 
  11. select an elevated disk larger 
  12. than the horizon one to match 
  13. it. The amount by which it is 
  14. larger is a measure of the 
  15. illusion for that observer. The 
  16. reverse condition was also 
  17. tested, in which the elevated 
  18. disk was used as the standard. 
  19. In that case, the illusion was 
  20. revealed by the observer 
  21. selecting a smaller horizon 
  22. disk as the one that appeared to 
  23. match the elevated disk. As is 
  24. typical of laboratory 
  25. experiments on perception, 
  26. and particularly of experiments 
  27. on the constancies, each 
  28. observer was asked to go 
  29. through several trials with 
  30. each disk as a standard, the 
  31. average of all trials was 
  32. computed, and then the average 
  33. of these averages for all 
  34. observers was computed.
