compare it to the size of the
disk located in the elevated sky
that could be seen through an
identical apparatus. By rotating
the drum, the observer could
select a disk that appeared to be
equal in size to the standard. If
a moon illusion occurredΓÇöΓÇôthat
is, if the horizon disk looked
largerΓÇöΓÇôthe observer would
select an elevated disk larger
than the horizon one to match
it. The amount by which it is
larger is a measure of the
illusion for that observer. The
reverse condition was also
tested, in which the elevated
disk was used as the standard.
In that case, the illusion was
revealed by the observer
selecting a smaller horizon
disk as the one that appeared to
match the elevated disk. As is
typical of laboratory
experiments on perception,
and particularly of experiments
on the constancies, each
observer was asked to go
through several trials with
each disk as a standard, the
average of all trials was
computed, and then the average
of these averages for all
observers was computed.
